Oklahoma homeowners should prepare early for more tornados this year!

Why Meteorologists Are Worried About 2021 Storm Season

Storm season in Oklahoma often brings grapefruit-size hail, high winds, and F5 tornadoes. They occur so often that Spring/Summer has been nick-named “storm season” in Oklahoma. So what’s different about this year, and why are meteorologists so worried? As it turns out, several weather patterns have indicated it will be an above-average and potentially dangerous year. Read on to learn more about how to prep for storm season to protect your home and family.

La Niña’s Impact On Oklahoma’s Storm Season

Two primary weather patterns influence climate all across the world – El Nino and La Nina. We are currently in a La Nina climate pattern known for its cooler than average ocean temperatures. The ocean temperature cools the air, which moves across the globe. The temperature gradient between hot and cold air is the catalyst for large, damaging storms.

The last time the U.S. experienced this type of weather pattern was in 2011 – a year that broke records for the number of catastrophic storms. This has meteorologists worried.

Several studies validate their concern. One completed in 2015 shows a strong correlation between La Nina weather patterns and more hail/tornadoes across Oklahoma. Based on prior activity and predictions, weather experts say it will be a busy storm season starting in mid-march and April through June. At least one EF5 is expected to form in Kansas or Oklahoma.

When Is Storm Season In Oklahoma?

According to the NOAA, the storm season in Oklahoma starts in the spring and ends after summer. Statistically, the threat of tornadoes is highest in April and May.

Prepare Now For Storm Season

“It pays to plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.” – Howard J Ruff.

Don’t wait until a hail storm or tornado hits to plan how to keep your home and family safe. According to Ready.gov, there are five major components to creating a disaster plan:

  1. Receiving alerts and warnings
  2. Having an emergency shelter plan
  3. Knowing evacuation routes
  4. Practicing a family communication plan
  5. Having an emergency kit available

How To Prevent Costly Storm Damage Repairs

As home exterior and roofing experts, we’ve seen our fair share of storm damage to homes in the OKC metro area. Here are our top tips to keep your home safe before, during, and after a severe storm.

  1. Get a home inspection before storm season begins. This may seem strange, as your home likely doesn’t have damage, but it’s super essential for homeowners. This inspection will document your home’s condition, which will help your insurance company determine covered damages should you suffer any later.
  2. Pay attention to weekly weather forecasts and move furniture, toys, and outside items indoors before storms hit. Strong winds can send patio furniture flying, causing damage to siding, broken windows, and more. This simple action can help protect your home in a big way.
  3. Choose a roofing contractor now. Widespread storms can cause long waitlists, and the last thing you want to do is go with the first contractor you find simply because your home is in desperate need of repair. Get tips in our free online guide!
  4. Always get an inspection after severe storms. Wind and hail cause roof damage that is hard to see and will cause expensive problems if not addressed immediately.
